Introduction: Why Can a Metal You Cannot Eat Be Exchanged for Wealth?
Imagine finding a piece of gold in the wilderness. You cannot eat it or drink it, and it cannot directly provide food or shelter. Yet for thousands of years, people have been willing to exchange grain, land, goods, and even their labor for it.
By 2026, we have banknotes, bank cards, mobile payments, stocks, bonds, and even cryptocurrencies. Yet gold remains part of central bank reserves around the world. In the second quarter of 2026, total global gold demand, including over-the-counter activity, was approximately 1,269 tonnes. Central banks and other official institutions purchased roughly 289 tonnes on a net basis, while the quarterly average LBMA Gold Price PM was about US$4,506 per troy ounce. World Gold Council: Q2 2026 Report
This raises the central question: what makes gold valuable? The answer involves its physical properties, the ways people exchange goods, and how societies establish and sustain trust in wealth.
1. Before Gold Became Money: Scarcity, Durability, and Shared Acceptance
Gold did not first become valuable on the day someone minted a gold coin. Long before standardized coinage, people used it for ornament, ceremony, and storing wealth. Its bright appearance, limited supply, and resistance to corrosion allowed it to endure over long periods.
From a trading perspective, a good that spoils easily, cannot be divided conveniently, or is expensive to transport is poorly suited to widespread use as a medium of exchange. Precious metals gained importance because they were relatively durable, could be divided by weight, and concentrated considerable value in a small volume. Gold stood out for its chemical stability: even after a long time underground, it generally does not rust as iron does.
The history of money, however, did not follow a universal sequence from barter to gold to paper. Accounting, debt, payments in goods, and metal money coexisted for long periods. Gold became an important monetary material through the interaction of trading needs and institutional arrangements.
Even when people valued gold, transactions presented a practical problem: someone had to weigh the metal and assess its purity. Accepting a piece of metal did not necessarily tell you how much gold it contained. Making trade easier required a standard that people could repeatedly recognize and accept.
2. Lydia’s Innovation: Giving Metal a Recognizable Standard
Around the seventh century BCE, early coins appeared in Lydia and neighboring areas in what is now western Turkey. They were often made of electrum, an alloy of gold and silver. Their significance lay in bringing weight, a recognizable stamp, and an issuing authority together, making a piece of metal easier for both sides of a transaction to accept as payment.
Around the sixth century BCE, Lydia began producing separate gold and silver coins, commonly associated with King Croesus. Gold coins bearing a lion and a bull are a well-known example of this development. Questions about the attribution and dating of early coinage remain, so the entire process should not be credited too simply to one individual. British Museum: Money Gallery Guide
The crucial change was that people were no longer dealing only with a piece of metal that needed fresh examination. They could recognize a unit of value carrying an accepted mark. Coinage did not invent trust, but it made trust easier to identify, transmit, and use repeatedly.
Persia and various states in the Greek world subsequently developed metal coinage further. Gold increasingly served not only as a precious material but also as a monetary asset used for payment, storing wealth, and expressing political authority.
3. Rome and the Solidus: How Stability Builds Trust
By the Roman period, gold was deeply embedded in imperial finance and wealth. Gold coins could be used for large payments, military and administrative spending, and storing wealth, while everyday transactions still required silver coins, copper coins, and other forms of payment.
In the fourth century CE, the solidus promoted by Constantine I had a standard weight of approximately 4.5 grams. This coin and its later forms remained influential for a long time. A Constantinian gold solidus dated 313–315 CE in the Metropolitan Museum of Art weighs 4.47 grams, providing a tangible example of this history. The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Gold Solidus of Constantine I
When a gold coin maintains a reliable weight and purity over time, merchants can more readily trust that others will accept it. The issuer still matters, but traders also care about immediate questions: how much precious metal does this coin contain, and will they be able to spend it in the next market?
This approaches a central principle of money: I accept it not only because I believe it has value, but also because I expect others to accept it. Gold’s physical properties, combined with that shared expectation, helped sustain trust in it as money.
4. Medieval Trade: How Gold Crossed Borders
The Western Roman Empire disappeared, but gold did not. Byzantium, the Islamic world, and European trading cities continued to issue and use their own gold coins. Political boundaries kept changing, while gold continued to connect distant markets.
The Florentine florin, introduced in 1252, and the Venetian ducat, first issued in 1284, became important currencies in medieval European trade. Consistent metal content and familiar designs helped them gain acceptance across regions. Deutsche Bundesbank: Early Modern Gold Coins; British Museum: Money Gallery Guide
A distant merchant might know little about a particular ruler, but could assess a coin’s weight and purity. The issuing city’s reputation, commercial networks, and the value of the metal all supported acceptance. Gold thus acquired a basis of trust that was not wholly dependent on any one state.
This ability to gain acceptance across regions helps explain gold’s later role as an international reserve asset. It can function across different systems without depending solely on a promise from a single issuer.
5. Global Trade and Paper Money: Why Use Paper That Represents Gold?
From the fifteenth century onward, oceanic voyages and expanding global trade drew gold and silver into wider international circulation. Yet there were few periods when gold alone served as money. Gold, silver, copper coins, and credit instruments such as bills of exchange often met different kinds of payment needs.
Gold was suitable for storing substantial value and settling international payments, but transporting the physical metal always involved costs and risks. Moving metal for every large transaction meant paying for transport, storage, verification, and security.
A more convenient arrangement gradually developed: keep the metal with a trusted institution and allow claims redeemable for that metal to circulate. As long as holders believed those claims could be redeemed on the agreed terms, they could perform some of the functions of money.
This is not a complete account of the origins of paper money worldwide, but it helps explain the redeemable banknote systems that later developed in Europe. As those systems evolved, gold increasingly served as the basis for redemption behind money, rather than as metal passed directly from hand to hand.
6. The Gold Standard: Giving Different Currencies a Common Basis
Britain’s coinage reform of 1816 established a legal foundation for the formal gold standard. Gold convertibility resumed in 1821, bringing the system fully into operation. During the later nineteenth century, more countries adopted gold standards, making gold an important common reference for different currencies. The Royal Mint: The 1816 Coinage Act and the Gold Standard
The basic idea of a gold standard is that a monetary unit corresponds to a specified amount of gold, with convertibility maintained under the system’s rules. If two currencies each represent a defined quantity of gold, there is a relatively clear reference for their exchange rate. This arrangement can reduce some of the exchange-rate uncertainty involved in cross-border trade.
Yet a promise of stability also imposes constraints. Economies expand, bank credit changes, and wars or financial crises increase the demand for funds, while gold reserves cannot grow quickly in response. Maintaining convertibility can come into sharp conflict with stabilizing banks and responding to recession.
The First World War led many countries to suspend or restrict gold convertibility. Some attempted to restore the gold standard afterward, but restoration proved difficult and the Great Depression dealt the system another severe blow. Britain’s departure in 1931 was an important point in its breakdown. The Royal Mint: What Was the Gold Standard?
This history shows that gold can impose discipline on money, but cannot automatically solve every problem of economic management. When a fixed redemption promise conflicts with practical pressures, governments may choose to change the system.
7. Bretton Woods: Gold Moves Behind the Dollar
In 1944, the Bretton Woods conference established the framework for the postwar international monetary system. The dollar maintained an official link to gold at US$35 per troy ounce, while other currencies maintained adjustable fixed exchange rates against the dollar. Gold no longer needed to circulate in ordinary people’s wallets, yet it remained foundational to the international monetary system. Federal Reserve History: Creation of the Bretton Woods System
An important distinction is that official dollar-to-gold convertibility was principally available to foreign monetary authorities. It did not mean that an ordinary person could take dollars to the U.S. government at any time and obtain gold at US$35 per ounce.
As global trade expanded, the international economy needed more dollars for payments and reserves. But dollar holdings abroad kept growing while U.S. gold reserves were limited. Markets and monetary authorities increasingly questioned whether the United States could meet all potential demands for redemption.
That tension ultimately undermined confidence in the system. The more the dollar served as a global reserve currency, the harder it became to ignore the pressure on its promise of gold convertibility.
8. 1971: The Dollar Breaks Its Gold Link and Pricing Moves Toward the Market
On August 15, 1971, U.S. President Richard Nixon suspended official dollar convertibility into gold, commonly described as “closing the gold window.” The decision severed the central redemption mechanism of Bretton Woods. By 1973, major currencies had moved toward floating exchange rates, further dismantling the earlier arrangement. Federal Reserve History: Nixon Ends Dollar Convertibility to Gold; Federal Reserve History: The Smithsonian Agreement
Gold did not acquire a market price for the first time in 1971. Private gold markets already existed, and a two-tier arrangement separating official transactions from the private market had operated since 1968. The significance of 1971 was the end of the dollar’s previous gold-redemption commitment to foreign monetary authorities. Federal Reserve History: Launch of the Bretton Woods System
Thereafter, gold was increasingly priced as an independent asset. Supply and demand, inflation expectations, real interest rates, movements in the dollar, and demand for liquidity during crises all influence what investors are willing to pay.
9. From the 1970s to the Twenty-First Century: Gold Does Not Only Rise
The figures retained from the original conversation put gold’s annual average price at approximately US$40.8 per troy ounce in 1971 and US$614.8 in 1980. High inflation and economic instability during the 1970s provide important context for that rise. An annual average, however, represents the average price across a year, not the highest price reached on a particular day.
Gold subsequently experienced a prolonged adjustment. Lower inflation, changes in the appeal of other assets, and shifts in interest rates and the dollar can all affect demand for gold. Gold does not itself generate interest or corporate earnings, so the opportunity cost of holding it remains relevant to investors.
In the twenty-first century, the bursting of the dot-com bubble, the 2008 global financial crisis, quantitative easing, the pandemic, and high inflation repeatedly brought gold into discussions about safety and protecting purchasing power. Demand for a haven does not mean its price rises immediately in every crisis. Investors may also sell gold when they urgently need cash.
Understanding gold requires looking at periods of decline and years of sideways movement as well as sustained advances. Choosing only a low starting point and a high endpoint can conceal the volatility experienced along the way.
10. 2025–2026: Why Gold Still Belongs in the Reserve System
In 2025, the annual average LBMA Gold Price PM was US$3,431.54 per troy ounce. The table retains the original conversation’s one-decimal presentation of US$3,431.5. The corresponding annual average for 2024 was US$2,386.2. LBMA: Annual Precious Metals Forecast Survey and Actual Results
The quarterly averages for the first and second quarters of 2026 were US$4,872.9 and US$4,506.3 per troy ounce, respectively. The lower second-quarter figure shows that gold can decline substantially even while it remains in focus. Both figures are quarterly averages, not the full-year average for 2026. World Gold Council: Q2 2026 Report
One important reason central banks hold gold is that physical gold is not itself a debt issued by a company or a state. It does not depend on a debtor paying principal and interest on schedule. This gives it characteristics different from those of bonds or bank deposits.
However, the absence of an issuer’s default risk in gold itself does not make every way of holding gold risk-free. Price movements, custody arrangements, and the structure of financial products used to obtain exposure still affect outcomes. Gold’s role as a reserve asset does not mean that buying it at any time guarantees against loss.
11. Gold Price Table, 1971–2026
The tables list approximate annual averages for 1971–2025 in chronological order, followed by separate quarterly averages for Q1 and Q2 2026. Prices are expressed in U.S. dollars per troy ounce, shown to one decimal place, and are not adjusted for inflation.
This edition preserves the nine price figures explicitly shown in the original conversation. Because the original file was unavailable, the remaining years were filled from the average closing price column in the Money Metals historical table. This is therefore a reconstructed reference table with identified sources, rather than a uniform LBMA PM series checked against the original file row by row. Money Metals: Gold Price History
Source codes: R identifies a value retained from the original conversation; M identifies a value filled from Money Metals and rounded; W identifies a retained value also checked against a World Gold Council report. Different benchmarks and averaging methods can produce small differences. In particular, this table should not be treated as a dataset for precise backtesting.

13. Returning to the Original Question: Why Is Gold Valuable?
Gold is scarce, durable, divisible, and can be tested for purity. It stores considerable value in a small volume. These qualities help explain why people have repeatedly chosen it, but cannot alone explain its social standing over thousands of years.
At a deeper level lies the accumulation of trust. From merchants accepting a familiar gold coin, to banks promising redemption, to central banks including gold in their reserves, its role has repeatedly changed while acceptance has carried across different systems.
When people worry about purchasing power, financial stability, or an uncertain future, gold often returns to their attention. It cannot eliminate those concerns or guarantee a positive return over every period, but it offers an asset that does not directly depend on a single issuer’s promise to repay a debt.
The movement from an official redemption price of US$35 per ounce to later market prices above US$4,000 is more than a change in numbers. It reflects long-term changes in monetary systems, the dollar’s purchasing power, asset demand, and perceptions of risk. An official fixed price and a market average are also not strictly equivalent measures.
The history of gold reveals how people seek to preserve wealth, establish trust, and carry value from the present into an uncertain future. Perhaps that is an important reason it remains part of our world after thousands of years.

Data and Editorial Notes
This file reorganizes and translates, paragraph by paragraph, the long-form text available in the original conversation. Because the original attachment, “黄金为什么值钱_从古代货币到2026_完整版.md,” could not be retrieved, this is a reconstructed complete bilingual article and cannot be described as word-for-word identical to that file. The source list, notes, and disclaimer were also newly prepared for this edition, with matching English text.
All explicitly listed prices from the original conversation are preserved: 40.8 for 1971, 614.8 for 1980, 279.1 for 2000, 1,224.5 for 2010, 1,769.6 for 2020, 2,386.2 for 2024, 3,431.5 for 2025, 4,872.9 for Q1 2026, and 4,506.3 for Q2 2026. The remaining years are sourced additions made for this edition and are not claimed to match the original table exactly.
The table combines retained figures with newly filled values. In particular, the original figures for 2000, 2010, and 2020 were not replaced by the different figures in the supplementary source. This prioritizes preserving the known original values, but means the table is not a strictly continuous series calculated on one statistical basis. The R code identifies these retained figures and their provenance.
Throughout the article, an “ounce” in a gold-price context means a troy ounce. One troy ounce is approximately 31.1035 grams, different from the avoirdupois ounce used in everyday measurement. A dollar price per ounce is also not the same as a renminbi price per gram; conversion requires both an exchange rate and the appropriate weight conversion.
An annual average is not a year-end price, nor is it the year’s high or low. Nominal prices are not adjusted for inflation, so comparisons spanning decades do not directly measure gains in purchasing power. The historical table also excludes bid–ask spreads, transaction charges, storage costs, and taxes.
For historical accuracy, this edition distinguishes Britain’s legislation in 1816 from the restoration of convertibility in 1821. It also distinguishes the closing of the gold window in 1971 from the further breakdown of fixed exchange rates in 1973. These clarifications appear consistently in both the Chinese text and its English translation.
